Background:
Until Flynns parents moved to Mars, the Taggart family had never left their small corner of North America. The son of
career academics, Flynn spent most of his life studying Martian history. When he announced to his parents that he would be
joining Starfleet and not following in his parents footsteps they were naturally surprised but supportive. It was only when
Flynns graduating academy thesis on the history of pre-federation Terran-Martian cultural identity was published and spawned
an uproar of academic research that they truly accepted his choice to dedicate himself to Starfleet and not Academia.
Although both history and flying came naturally to Flynn during his academy days, it was only though the help of an upperclassman,
Cadet-Commander Anita Wolfe, that he was able to barely pass conversational Klingon. Although Flynn was admitted to Starfleets
command training program, Flynn, against all the advice of all his classmates, applied to the Andorian War College one of
only 47 other non-Andorian Starfleet officers accepted into the program.
The rigorous strategic and physical training involved in year on Andoria earned him a fast promotion and position aboard
the Endeavor serving as its helmsman during and in the years after the Battle of Wolf 359. Unmatched as a pilot by any aboard
the Endeavor Flynn consistently the winner in shuttle races as well as in the annual. Deck 6 Martial Arts Tournament;. While
the last championship belt that he won aboard that post came at the cost of a broken arm against the ships Science Officer,
a Vulcan who had taken an interest in Judo, his martial arts record aboard ship was unmatched until the Endeavor’s
decommissioning.
Like any promising Starfleet officer, Flynns career continued on a steady path. He was promoted to Operations officer
aboard the Victory and after four years of distinguished service, two more papers on Martian-Terran cultural history and the
outbreak of the dominion war, he was promoted to Lieutenant Commander and Second officer aboard the Jenova. It was aboard
that ship that Flynns promising career stalled.
During the first months of the war the Jenova, while transporting the newly appointed Federation secretary of war to Earth,
came under heavy attack by Dominion forces. The Captain and First Officer were both killed during the initial attack. Assuming
command, Flynn attempted to co-ordinate repairs with a punctured lung and half of his crew dead while the Jenova drifted in
space. One of the survivors was Federation Secretary of War Miles Emmerson Wickett , who insisted that Flynn cede command
to him as he had previously carried the rank of Vice-Admiral within Starfleet, Flynn refused citing he was not part of the
current chain of command. Ordering him locked in his quarters, Flynn was able to repair his ship and lurch back to as star
base only to find security officers waiting to arrest him.
The secretary had seen to charging him with every offence on the books, but he was only brought up on negligence, insubordination
and dereliction of duty. Testimony from the Jenovas remaining crew saved Flynn career and cleared him of charges, but the
damage had been done. Despite daily coverage by the Federation News Service, Flynns reputation within Starfleet had been
tarnished by what Secretary Wickett had called a gross oversight by the board of inquiry regarding an officer with no respect
for the chain of command;.
Without any chance for future advancement in the fleet, Flynn put in for transfer off starships and as far away from the
front lines as he possibly could. Starfighter pilots were in short supply due to their high attrition rates. It seemed the
only way Flynn could redeem himself within the fleet. Returning to the academy was difficult. Old friends had stopped sending
him letters, new friends were impossible to make. With only steadfast support coming from his parents, an Andorian woman
he had been involved with when he was at the war college and his best friend from high school, he grew very depressed. Masking
his pain with alcohol and a valiant front he voluntarily spent three hours a week with a counselor.
Each day he applied for transfer to front line units, and each day he was declined a transfer. Trapped on his home world
as a test pilot, he was resolved that there would be nothing more to his career than formation flying and attacking target
drones doomed to be seen as a coward for the rest of his life.
When one of his transfer requests came back approved, but classified by Starfleet he accepted without hesitation.
